St. Jude Children's Research Hospital - Child Life Department

Camp Stay Awake Program
Design + Illustration

For this freelance project, I had the honor of working closely with the Child Life department at St. Jude’s. They were crafting a special program for children who have to receive special imaging (MRI) for their diagnostics. I learned that most kids have to be sedated prior to their imaging because the machines often cause them fear and severe apprehension. Having to be sedated meant that kids would have to forego a meal prior to being scanned, which was not an ideal situation. To combat this, the Child Life department created a program where kids would be able to have practice scans with an MRI simulator to prepare them for the real thing. The end goal was to help the kids have the confidence to do their scans without anesthesia. If kids could complete their scans without being sedated breakfast would become something they could participate in and that would be a success. The team at St. Jude provided me with the name of the project and the tagline “Where Breakfast Can Become a Reality”. This is where my inspiration came from.

After presenting them with a few concepts, we proceeded with the design below. I created a seal that utilized breakfast food imagery displayed as real-world objects to engage the imagination of the kids. The project deliverables were a seal/logo, a simplified version of the seal, brochures, a completion certificate, and a design for a t-shirt. The brochures and certificates were in both English and Spanish. I worked hard to stay within the hospital’s brand standards and color palettes (which made for a little challenge). The t-shirt design had to altered slightly to limit the number of colors for printing.
